Overview
What you need to know about roofing.
The roof is the single most important system on your house — and the one most often patched, bodged and ignored until it fails catastrophically. A well-built roof keeps weather out, energy in and structural timbers dry. A bad one rots ceilings, ruins insulation, attracts vermin and ultimately destroys property value.
What it is
We carry out new pitched roofs, complete re-roofs, flat roof installations, roof repairs, re-tiling, leadwork, chimney repairs and rebuilds, fascia/soffit/guttering replacement, and roof insulation upgrades. Both residential and small commercial.
Who it's for
Owners of older Stockport properties (Victorian, Edwardian, 1930s) where original roofs are reaching end-of-life, anyone with active leaks, owners planning loft conversions or extensions, and homeowners noticing damp patches, missing tiles or sagging ridge lines.
When you need it
When you can see daylight from inside the loft, when there are damp patches on bedroom ceilings, when tiles or slates are missing or slipping, when flashing around chimneys is corroded, or when the existing roof is 50+ years old and approaching the end of its design life.
Why a specialist
Roofing combines structural understanding, weatherproofing detail and working safely at height. A roof installed by an experienced builder with the right materials will last decades. The same roof installed by a chancer with the wrong tiles, the wrong battens or the wrong flashing will leak inside two winters.
The Real Risk
What happens when this goes wrong.
Roofing is the trade with the most cowboys for one simple reason: most defects are invisible from the ground. Here's what hides up there.
Risks of cutting corners
- Rotten roof timbers from years of slow leaks behind chimneys, around dormers or under valleys.
- Failed felt and battens — meaning the entire roof needs stripping even if the tiles look fine.
- Lead flashings replaced with mortar fillets that crack within 12 months.
- Inadequate ventilation causing condensation, rotting rafters and ruined insulation.
- Flat roofs laid without falls, holding standing water until the membrane fails.
Common homeowner mistakes
- Patching repeatedly instead of investigating the root cause.
- Accepting cement fillets in place of proper lead flashing.
- Hiring a roofer based on a leaflet through the door without checking insurance or references.
- Replacing tiles without inspecting battens, felt and timbers underneath.
- Choosing the cheapest flat roof system on a roof you'll have to replace again in 5 years.

Technical Detail
The detail that separates a 30-year job from a 5-year one.
Roofing is a wider trade than most homeowners realise. Here's the detail behind every type of roof we work on in the Stockport area.
Pitched roofs — tiles and slates
We install and re-roof in concrete tiles (Marley, Redland), clay tiles (Sandtoft, Dreadnought), natural slate (Welsh, Spanish, Brazilian) and reclaimed materials to match heritage properties. All tiles laid on breathable underlay (Tyvek, Permavent or equivalent) over treated battens at correct gauge for the tile type.
Flat roofs
We install three flat roof systems: GRP fibreglass (best for small, complex shapes), single-ply membrane such as Sarnafil or Sika (best for large flat areas, 30+ year lifespan), and EPDM rubber (cost-effective, 30+ years, ideal for garages and small extensions). We never install pour-and-roll felt — it's a 5–10 year solution at best.
Leadwork
All flashings, soakers, valleys and chimney aprons are formed in Code 4 or Code 5 lead, properly dressed and fixed with lead clips or wedges. We do not use cement fillets, lead-replacement flashband, or sealant as a substitute — these are the source of 80% of repeat roof leaks.
Chimney repairs and rebuilds
Chimneys take more weather than any other part of the roof. We re-point in lime or cement mortar (matched to property age), replace damaged bricks, install new pots and DPCs, fit lead trays and aprons, and rebuild from above the roof line where required. Removed chimneys have the breast supported with a proper structural solution — never just chopped off and capped.
Insulation and ventilation
We upgrade loft insulation to current standards (270mm mineral wool minimum) while ensuring eaves ventilation is maintained — blocked eaves cause more condensation problems than the insulation itself. Ridge ventilation, soffit vents and tile vents are specified to suit each roof.
Fascias, soffits and guttering
We replace timber fascias and soffits with low-maintenance uPVC, fit new ogee-profile guttering with 65mm downpipes, and ensure correct falls so water actually reaches the drains. Half-finished roof jobs that ignore the rainwater goods cause damp problems for years.
