General building covers a wide span. Here's the technical detail behind the most common jobs we're called for in the Stockport area.
Brickwork and stonework
We work in standard and reclaimed brick, dressed and rough stone, and matching mortars to property age (lime mortar for pre-1930s properties, cement-based for modern). Bonds matched to existing — Flemish, English, English Garden Wall, stretcher — and joint profiles tooled to match (struck, weathered, bucket-handle, recessed).
Garden and boundary walls
All garden walls built on proper concrete foundations (typically 600mm wide x 200mm deep for walls up to 1.8m, deeper for taller). Movement joints every 6m on long runs. Coping stones bedded on full mortar and pointed. Walls over 1m high require footings to building regs and (in some locations) planning permission — we advise at survey.
Driveways and patios
Sub-base preparation is what separates a 30-year drive from a 5-year one. We excavate to firm strata, lay 150–200mm of compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then bed in either block paving (laid course sand, polymeric jointed), resin-bound (over permeable concrete base), or natural stone (mortar bedded with primer). All driveways include drainage to comply with SUDS regulations.
Chimney repairs
Re-pointing in matched mortar (lime for older properties), brick replacement using matched reclaimed materials, lead flashing renewal in Code 4/5 lead, new pots and DPCs, and full rebuilds where necessary. We never use cement fillets, sealant or flashband as substitutes for proper lead.
Porches and canopies
Built on proper foundations tied into the main building, with damp-proof courses correctly lapped to the existing house DPC, lead trays at junctions, and roofs detailed for full weather performance. Porches are not 'bolt-on' projects — they're miniature extensions.
Repair and maintenance
Failed lintels (replaced with steel or pre-cast concrete to engineer's spec), cracked render (cut out and re-rendered with proper expanded metal lath where needed), spalled brickwork (cut out and replaced or repaired with brick matching repair mortars), and failed pointing (raked out to depth and re-pointed in correct mortar).
